TAO Tokenomics: The 21 Million Cap and the Halving Cycle
Bittensor borrowed Bitcoin's monetary policy almost line for line. Here is how TAO is issued - and why it just got scarcer.
TAO’s supply schedule is one of the clearest homages to Bitcoin in crypto. There will only ever be 21 million TAO, released on an exponential curve that slows over time - and in December 2025 that curve took its first big step down.
One block, one schedule
A new block is written to the Bittensor chain roughly every 12 seconds. In the network’s first cycle, each block minted 1 TAO, which works out at a maximum of about 7,200 TAO per day. That issuance is the fuel that pays miners, validators and subnet owners for the work that secures and improves the network.
The first halving
On 14 December 2025, Bittensor completed its first halving. New issuance was cut in half - from 1 TAO per block to 0.5 TAO per block, or roughly 3,600 TAO a day. Like Bitcoin, TAO follows a four-year halving rhythm, and the next reduction is projected for around 2029, with issuance continuing to decay toward the 21 million hard cap.
Why the cap matters
A fixed, predictable supply does two things. It makes TAO a credibly scarce asset, which matters to anyone treating it as a long-term hold. And it forces the ecosystem to compete for a shrinking flow of new tokens, which raises the bar for what a subnet has to deliver to justify its share.
Not just a store of value
The important difference from Bitcoin is what the emissions buy. Bitcoin’s issuance pays for hashing. Bittensor’s pays for useful machine intelligence - inference, training, data and prediction produced across its subnets. Every halving therefore tightens the reward for genuinely valuable AI work, not just for burning electricity.
For holders, the halving story is simple: the taps that create new TAO have already been turned down once, and they are scheduled to keep turning down. For builders, it is a reminder that the window to earn generous early emissions narrows with every cycle.
